How to Develop Basic Writing for Kindergarten Level Children

November 22, 2023

The preschool years should be fun and enriching, filled with activities that nurture early language and numeracy development. As parents, you want to support your child’s early learning experience with activities that reinforce and complement what they learn in school.

Filling their time with enjoyable activities that nurture basic writing skills is one of the key things you can do. Here’s how to develop basic writing for kindergarten level children at home.

Develop Hand and Finger Strength

The development of basic writing skills doesn’t start with recognising and writing known alphabets. Instead, it begins much earlier than that, with the basic ability to hold a pencil, crayon, or other writing tools. You can support this by helping your child build their fine motor skills.

Try activities like threading beads, cutting shapes with child-safe scissors, playing with playdough, and more. These activities will allow them to better control writing instruments, get comfortable with these tools and develop neater handwriting later on.

Copying Basic Alphabet Shapes

Before you start encouraging your child to copy alphabets and words, start by having them copy basic lines and shapes that form the foundation of letters—like vertical lines, circles, and triangles. You may also want them to copy larger and smaller lines and shapes so that they will be able to differentiate writing capital and small letters later on.

Tracing Alphabets with Their Fingers

Using flashcards with alphabets will be useful here. Expose your child to cards with large alphabets printed on them, and play games where they outline these alphabets with their fingers.

You can also trace the shape of letters on their palms and have them guess which one it is. Introduce just a few letters at a time to keep things simple and avoid overwhelming them. Let them master these alphabets before moving on to another set of alphabet cards.

Play Joining the Dots

The good news for parents is that there are many activity books which allow you to introduce basic writing skills to your children. Dot-to-dot activity books are a great way to help your child form letters and even simple words. This trains them to recognise the shapes of alphabets and be able to replicate them more easily when holding a pencil.

Develop Their General Language Skills

In order for your child to write more confidently, they should also be able to read confidently. You can support your child’s writing by building their language skills through reading together, recognising words, and encouraging self-expression using rich vocabulary.
