Comprehension Skills

What your child will learn:

  • Make Predictions
    • When we make a prediction, we are guessing what happens in the story based on the title, heading, text and your personal experiences before we begin reading the story.
    • Making predictions involves the process of thinking ahead and anticipating events in the text during the reading process.
  • Make Inferences
    • We are not always given every fact or detail when we read a passage.
    • Learning to read between the lines is a comprehension skill that is the most difficult to master.
    • By learning how to make inferences, students can learn to become better readers.
  • Distinguish Between Fact & Opinion
    • A fact is something that can be proven to be correct.
    • An opinion is what someone thinks or believes.
    • Having the ability to distinguish both is a necessary reading skill which will be taught in the workshop.
  • Interpreting Figurative Language
    • Figurative language is language that uses words or expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation.
    • It is used by the writer to show comparison or for dramatic effect.
    • Students will learn to identify and interpret different types of figurative language. (E.g. simile, metaphor, personification, onomatopoeia, idiom, hyperbole and oxymoron.)
